Chapter 15

Kim dived a total of ten times in Calvi. Her first experience underwater had been so exhilarating she was practically bouncing with excitement at the thought of doing it again.

Kim could fully understand why Hélène was so passionate about it. As soon as she descended into the depths, a calm washed over her. All the noise of the world vanished, replaced by the sounds of the ocean.

Hélène had explained that the sound underwater was magnified, it made the experience even more magical in Kim’s eyes. She loved hearing her breath and the little bubbles crackle around her ears. The little swoosh sound that came after a fish zipped off to hide was wonderful.

On their third dive, Kim had almost forgotten to breathe properly when they were ascending to the surface. The sun was sending rays of light through the water, which highlighted the clouds of fish swimming around them and the vast amount of bubbles that the group produced.

It really was a wonderland and Kim couldn’t wait to come back for more. She’d made Hélène laugh on several occasions with her impatience and eagerness to get back in the water. Hélène had repeated several times that they couldn’t dive continuously, which Kim understood, but it didn’t make her feel any less excited for the next time.

Now that Kim had reached ten dives, Hélène suggested they move on to the next dive site. The main town was called Galéria. Hélène seemed to be excited to dive there. There was a tunnel they could go through—if Kim was feeling confident—and a shipwreck. Kim was more than happy to try something a little different.

“Do you think you would be interested in taking the test today?” Hélène asked as they sat by the pool sipping cocktails. They’d gotten into somewhat of a routine lately. They would normally dive in the morning, sometimes again in the afternoon—if Kim wasn’t feeling too tired—then they would retreat to their suites for a while to wash up or take a nap. Once they were feeling refreshed, they would sit by the pool with cocktails until the evening. Leo and David joined them now and then. Holly had kept herself busy, only stopping by to say hello and ask if Kim was enjoying herself.

“Yes, I’m ready.” Kim could have taken the test days ago if she were being honest. It wasn’t as if the questions were difficult. If she passed the written test and Hélène signed off on her proficiency, Kim would officially get her Level 1 diving title.

“Great, I’ll grab the paper and let you get to it. I don’t think it’s going to take you very long,” she scoffed playfully.

“Let me get some water down me first. I’ve had three of these bad boys already.” Kim grinned, hoisting up her piña colada.

“No rush.” Hélène winked as she made her way inside, presumably to get the test paper.

So far, they’d been on Connie for a week and a half. It was the longest time that Kim had ever been away from solid ground and she was loving every minute.
